MASAKO NIIMI

UNIVERSES SHIMMERING

We are very excited to introduce the incredibly beautiful and textured creations of Masako Niimi, an up and coming ceramic artisan from Chiba Prefecture near Tokyo. Her innovative use of glazing conjures images of star-filled heavens and crystalline new universes.

We met with Masako-san at a cafe in Tokyo to discuss her work and inspirations. Her method of glazing is inspired by “youhen”, which has a long tradition in ceramics and translates pretty much to “changed by the fire”.  While the method is based on a time honored tradition, her works have a fresh and exciting new vision to them. She told us that each new creation is a journey into the interplay between chemical reactions and art, a process she continues to explore and refine. One might call it alchemy.

Niimi says she continually strives to influence the reaction, but each piece is incredibly unique, like a snowflake — no two are ever exactly the same. There is magic because the outcome is never entirely predictable. Each piece she crafts becomes its own universe, with beautiful and delicate textural nuances.

We never tire of gazing at her creations, holding them at various angles to fully appreciate the depth and the ever-changing yet fragile beauty. We invite you to do the same!
